It sounds too good to be true. So does it actually work? The honest answer is mostly yes, with a few conditions. Here is how the technology works, where it lives up to the claim, and what to look for if you are thinking about buying one in Australia.

First, a bit of honesty about the name
“Smokeless” is a category name, not a guarantee. No wood fire is ever completely smoke free, because burning wood always produces some smoke, especially while it is getting going. How a smokeless fire pit works
The clever part is something called secondary combustion which results in minimal smoke.

Air is drawn in through holes at the bottom, and those vents pull in oxygen to fuel the primary burn before it travels up through the gap between the inner and outer walls and is heated along the way. By the time it reaches the top, that heated oxygen moves through the top holes, and because hot air rises it pours back into the fire near the rim.
Here is why that matters. The initial stage of combustion creates flame, visible smoke, and incomplete burning before the pit is fully hot. When wood burns, it releases gases and tiny unburnt particles. In a normal fire, a lot of those escape as smoke, and after startup even a smokeless fire pit can still produce some smoke until it reaches full temperature. In a smokeless fire pit, secondary combustion ignites smoke particles for cleaner burning, turning them into extra flame and heat instead of smoke. You often see this as a ring of dancing flames around the top of the fire. That is the secondary burn doing its job.
Do they actually work?
Yes, when used properly. A well designed smokeless fire pit produces noticeably less smoke than traditional fire pits, which means minimal smoke around your clothes and less exposure near your lungs than an open fire. The secondary burn from superheated air also gives you a hotter, cleaner flame, and many units can sustain a hot fire in roughly the 550-700 degrees Fahrenheit range for longer burn times when used well.
The catch is in those two words: used properly. The technology only works if the conditions are right.
What still causes smoke, even in a smokeless pit
If your smokeless fire pit is still smoking, it is almost always one of these:
- Wet or unseasoned wood. This is the big one. Damp wood produces smoke faster than any secondary burn can clean it up, and using wet or unseasoned wood can lead to excessive smoke production, even on a smokeless fire pit. Dry, seasoned hardwood under 20 percent moisture is essential for the best low smoke fire and efficient burning, especially with slow-burning hardwoods.
- The fire is not up to temperature yet. The secondary burn only kicks in once the pit is hot. Many units light quickly and can settle into nearly no smoke after roughly eight minutes, though some smoke during startup is normal while it is coming up to heat.
- Too much wood. Overloading the pit chokes the airflow and smothers the fire. Starting with a few pieces helps airflow better than stuffing the chamber, so less is more.
- Blocked airflow. Ash buildup over the lower air holes stops the system working. Keep them clear.
Get the wood and the airflow right and the difference is night and day.

Smokeless vs traditional fire pit: the tradeoffs
A smokeless pit is not automatically better for everyone. It depends on what you want.
- Smoke: smokeless wins clearly, especially in built up backyards where smoke drifting to neighbours is a real concern.
- Heat: the secondary burn produces a hotter, more efficient fire, so you often get more warmth from less wood. Heat is good!
- Fuel use: because they burn more completely, smokeless pits can be more efficient with wood.
- Cost: the engineering usually makes them a little more expensive than a basic open pit.
- Cooking: this is where a traditional open pit or a fire pit with a grill or plate can have the edge, because cooking is often about the coals and direct access, not just the flame.
